History

Eurella Community House

In 1951 a group of parents of intellectually handicapped children and young adults resolved to commence a temporary school in Burwood Police Citizens Club while seeking a more permanent address.  From this group grew the present Eurella House complex which was a Day Centre administered by a committee of parents and friends.

A public appeal was made by the neighbouring councils of Burwood, Strathfield, Concord, Ashfield together with Burwood Rotary Club.  This resulted in the purchase of a property at 2a Eurella Street Burwood in 1953 which became the Western Suburbs Branch of the S.C.W.A, then the Western Sydney Suburbs Branch Challenge Foundation. On 23rd June, 1993 Eurella Community Services Inc. became an Incorporated Association.

Because of increasing enrolments an additional building (the hall) was erected in 1961, which became classrooms for teenagers and young children.

As the centre developed, public support was maintained.  The adjoining property at 2 Eurella Street was purchased and on March 17th 1973 a new school building was opened.  Major alterations were then made to the interior of the vacated junior school at 2A Eurella Street, making it suitable for an activity-training centre for post school people with disabilities.

Finances necessary for the complex to operate come mainly from Government Subsidies, donations from the community and a very active Auxiliary.  In May 1983 the Education Department assumed responsibility for the education of children with disabilities.

Our present operations are:

An Ausralian Disability Enterprise, formerly known as "Business Services" which is located in North Strathfield. This service provides supported employment for adults with disabilities.

A Day Program which is housed in the old school building which provides day activities for school leavers and those who are no longer able to work in a Business Service.

A Group Home which is located in Sydney's Inner West and provides supported accommodation for 4 adults.

An Early intervention Service - Karobran, which is also located in the old School building and provides services for children with disabilities before they go to school.
